Rindge purchased the 13,000 acres of the Rancho Malibu estate in 1892 (later expanding it to 17,000acres), the area was famous to Native Americans as “Humaliwo”, translated as ‘where the surf sounds loudly’. Up through the US-Mexican War, the land had changed hands several times until it was sold to its final American owners. By 1929, the largely untouched area was subdivided by the Rindge family for financial reasons.

It didn’t take long to sell the subdivisions to sell – the climate, location by the sea, and untouched lots were attractive to anyone who could afford to build a home here.
